Freyr




	Freyr is a Norse god of weather and fertility; brother of Freya.



	Freyr is one of the most important gods of Norse paganism. Freyr was highly associated with farming, weather and, as a phallic fertility god, Freyr was also called upon to grant a fertile marriage. Freyr "bestows peace and pleasure on mortals". Freyr, sometimes referred to as Yngvi-Freyr, was especially associated with Sweden and seen as an ancestor of the Swedish royal house.



	He is married to the beautiful giantess Gerd, and is the son of Njord. His sister is Freya.



	Norse mythology is the overall term for the myths, legends and beliefs about supernatural beings of Norse pagans. It flourished prior to the Christianization of Scandinavia, during the Early Middle Ages, and passed into Nordic folklore, with some aspects surviving to the modern day. The mythology from the Romanticist Viking revival came to be an influence on modern literature and popular culture. Norse mythology is the study of the myths told in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Faroe islands) during the pre-Christian times, especially during the Viking age.




	In 1904, a Viking Age bronze statuette identified as a depiction of Freyr was discovered on the farm Rällinge in Lunda parish in the province of Södermanland, Sweden. It was found in the fill of a burial mound in close proximity to the oldest labyrinth in Sweden. The labyrinth dates back to the Bronze and possibly the Iron Age. Archeologists have concluded that ancient fertility rites were celebrated at the site.

	The statuette features Freyr as a bearded male, sitting cross-legged, with a large erect penis. He is wearing a pointed cap and stroking his triangular beard. The statue is nine centimeters tall and is displayed at the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities.
