Phallic stones in Portugal


	A menhir is a large, single upright standing stone (monolith or megalith), of prehistoric European origin. Menhirs are widely distributed across Europe, Africa and Asia, but are most numerous in Western Europe; in particular in Ireland, Great Britain and Brittany, France and Portugal. They originate from many different periods across pre-history, dating back to 5000 BC and were erected as part of a larger Megalithic culture that flourished in Europe and beyond. The word menhir was adopted from French, a combination of two words found in the Breton language; men - stone and hir - long . Many are shaped as phalluses, fertility symbols possibly used for rites.

	Menhir de Meada is the tallest monolith in the Iberian Peninsula, 7.15 metres tall.

	Penedo Comprido





	Penedo Comprido is a phallic menhir with a height of 5,6 m and with a 30 cm in diameter staff on the top. It is one of the most impressive isolated menhirs in the Iberian Peninsula.

	Menhir dos Almendras is 4 m high, with remains of carvings.

	The menhirs of Monsaraz

	Most of the phallic stones are found in the Monsaraz area, with more than 130 sites of menhirs.


	There are many megalithic sites in Portugal. Once this country was probably as rich of megalithic remnants as Spain or South France. In contrary to Ireland in Portugal has never existed such magic feeling for the big stones and for this reason many of the monuments were destroyed.
